Reflect upon your VTS experience with real art objects in the Museum of Art and Archaeology. How do museum experiences differ from experiences with digital images and/or prints? What benefits would a museum VTS experience have for your students? What obstacles would need to be overcome?
The VTS experience at the museum with real art objects was interesting and intriguing. Viewing the actual paintings/sculptures in real life is such a different experience than seeing them on paper or on a screen. The actual size of the Benton paintings and the details carved in the sculptures are aspects students rarely get to see. Experiences at a museum would offer a great atmosphere with few interruptions while viewing a variety of art work. I'm sure very few if any of my students have ever been to an actual art museum. Some of them would be very excited to know that they are going, however the closest art museum would be Columbia or Sedalia which are at least and hour and a half away if not longer. I'm not sure if that would be feasible at my school.
Perhaps the older students could travel? I took a day trip with my daughter's fourth grade class from Springfield to Jefferson City a few years back, and it went well. The students were allowed to bring Nintendos and DVD players, and it helped with the long drive. Are there grants available in Missouri that could help get a bus?
ReplyDeleteI like whackandsmack's idea! Or perhaps you could go on a Saturday and ask parents to get involved by chaperoning and carpooling. You all could even spend the night at a hotel with a swimming pool - that ought to pique their interest.
