 Mary Heilmann is a postmodern abstract artist.  Elementary students would find her work very interesting when they see the photographs that partially inspire some of her pieces.  Students live in a fantasy world during part of their day.  They are always make-believing and playing throughout their day.  By allowing them to use their imagination connecting fantasy to their lives can happen on a daily basis.  Connecting fantasy to other subject areas could happen in a variety of ways.  Students can use their imagination and hypothesize what will happen when you mix colors together on a painting or in math how an optical illusion can be created when you use converging and parallel lines to create an environment.  The students knowledge bas will be built through the viewing of this Art:21 video and class discussion of her work and ideas.  The students will engage by exploring wheat emotions they could express and how they could do this.  What types of experiences in your life (real or fantasy) could you draw from to create art about?  Using an abstract style they will express their ideas trough an art form.
